This award-winning novel was inspired by Frank Capra's famous "Why We Fight" recruiting films contrasted with the realities of harsh segregation in the armed forces; the still largely untold story of the German u-boats that frequented the Florida coast in 1942; and the old adage the "flag is the last refuge of a scoundrel." It is a story of an African-American family's hope for equality -- equality that seemingly can only come from a betrayal of the land they have loved for generations and a government that officially considers them to be second-class citizens. And then, there's Uncle Sam's -- a place where patriotism, cold beer and treachery are blended nightly to conceal a deadly secret.

Uncle Sam's
is a memorable story of the people, both black and white, of St. Augustine, Florida, during one week in 1942.  Combined with the fears and aspirations of the crew of a German u-boat lurking offshore, the story is one of deceit, espionage, passion and ambition.  The Big Band music, a touch of Cab Calloway, and a meticulously re-created setting all add up to an unforgettable story of courage and sacrifice.
